Are D.I.Y wedding invitations worth the effort and do they really save you money?

I get asked this a lot, now obviously I’m bias as I make my living selling wedding stationery, however I felt that I had to investigate and find out if making your own wedding invitations was actually cheaper than buying the ready made type of invitation.

Now I wasn’t going to cheat, so I decided that  I would take the most expensive products I sell, make a wedding invitation then compare the cost of my invitation to the cheapest ‘off the shelf’ invitations that were similar.

The card I made was a rather basic gatefold invitation with a ribbon, I added up the cost to make your own if you purchased all the parts required separately, total cost approximately 75 pence, that’s for a card that has been foil printed with ‘Wedding Invitation’  which includes the envelope, insert and ribbon.

My first stop was Confetti, immediately I found an almost identical card, the cost of which was £3.40! that’s a whopping saving of £2.65 per card, now I know Confetti can be expensive but that’s a serious chunk of change in you need 150 invitations.

O.K So maybe I got lucky, I tried a few more; Perfect wedding same design gatefold card, this time the price was £2.50, a saving of  £1.75, I carried on checking prices until I got bored, I found that there was no comparison,  the prices to buy ready made wedding invitations didn’t come close to do it yourself prices!

So my conclusion is, if you’re longing after that £5.00 priced wedding invitation you’ve seen in the shop window, forget it, do it yourself it’s only going to cost a quid!
